Technology and innovation for more efficient and sustainable waste treatment.

The environmental services subsidiary of Sacyr, Sacyr Environment, and Romero Polo will carry out the construction and operation of the municipal waste treatment center of Segrià (Lleida) for a total amount of 76.1 million euros.

The contract, awarded by the waste consortium Consorci de Residus del Segrià to Sacyr Environment and Romero Polo, consists of an initial construction phase of the new mechanical-biological treatment plant (MBT) and the expansion of the controlled waste deposit together with the operation of the existing composting plant and controlled deposit. The second phase consists of the management of the newly built MBT plant for 10 years, with the possibility of extending the term, by the consortium and also of the municipal waste landfill and the Recycling Center of the district that is located in the same facility.

The new facility will treat more than 60,000 tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) and 15,000 tons of organic matter of selective collection for a population of around 220,000 inhabitants.

Own technology

The selected process technology is included in the most advanced treatments in the recovery of resources and consists of a mechanical-biological treatment of the waste. This know-how, based on Sacyr’s more than 20 years of experience, represents an innovation in current waste management, since the amount of waste will be reduced and the useful life of the final waste disposal infrastructure in the region will increase.

An innovative pre-treatment line will be built in the new facility with the implementation of state-of-the-art optical separators and robots, which will enable maximizing the levels of by-product recovery.

The treatment of the organic matter from selective collection will be carried out in trench composting membranes, which are highly flexible, durable and sustainable, and will help minimize the carbon footprint, while reducing the emission of odors, resulting in compost of the highest quality.
