Guadalajara: a smart city thanks to new technologies

The smart city is already a reality in Guadalajara, Castilla-La Mancha, where the system was put in motion in 2015 but is 100% managed by Valoriza Medioambiente since July 2019.

Smart Guadalajara is a digital platform that manages street cleaning and urban solid waste collection services by giving citizens a fundamental role. Valoriza Medioambiente, a Sacyr Services company, has implemented a simple system that allows citizens to report tickets and instantly notify the city council about municipal service issues.

This is a data management platform that, whether applied in the context of administration or the private sector, allows to manage urban waste collection and street cleaning more efficiently.

“We wanted to open a bidirectional channel to improve communication between the citizens and the city council, and we have been successful at that. Just in the first full year of management, we tended to more than 9,000 tickets through the platform. Furthermore, we optimized selective waste collection routes thanks to our sensors that gauge the dumpsters' fill level", explains Patricia Yebra, head of Valoriza’s cleaning and collection service.

Additionally, as a novelty, thanks to the horizontal, flexible, and open structure of Smart Guadalajara, the city council has opted for adding other municipal services, like garden maintenance, to achieve more efficient management.

 

More sustainable services

From a sustainability standpoint, we have reduced our atmospheric emissions by more than 70% by using electric and hybrid vehicles.

“Our platform is extremely useful to the city council and public administrations in general, as they could use it for other municipal services, like gardening, street furniture, etc.”, affirms Patricia. “We have proved the efficacy of our services since 2015, for instance, in the immediacy of the ticket notices reported by the citizens.”

“Valoriza brings innovation, sustainability, and talent into its human team, as well as the use of new technologies that allow for more digitalized processes”, says Patricia.

On this matter, David Redondo, from Valoriza Medioambiente’s optimization, improvement and innovation department, explains the improvement on the services thanks to new technologies, like Big Data science, Artificial Intelligence, and Machine Learning supported on GIS and smart GPS systems to advance on the digital transformation of processes by obtaining real-time data that help us make objective and smart decisions through every day real service data.
