As part of a consortium with Farrans, we are working to design, build and commission the section of the Edinburgh light rail or tram network that will link York Place and Newhaven. 

This new section will have eight stops and will extend further north the tram line that currently connects the airport to Haymarket station and Princes Street in the center of Edinburgh.  The budget is 120 million euros and, once completed, an estimated 16 million people will use this tram each year.

Sacyr Concesiones, in consortium with infrastructure manager Plenary, will undertake the operation, maintenance, and improvement of the power, water, and steam generation and distribution utility systems on the University of Idaho campus, which spans 640 hectares and is located in the city of Moscow.

With this contract, Sacyr achieves a new milestone in its 2015-2020 Strategic Plan: to secure its first P3 contract in the United States. 

Founded in 1889, the University of Idaho offers more than 150 degrees to its nearly 12,000 students. The 640-hectare Moscow campus includes 253 buildings and 32 hectares of green spaces. 

 

A small city

The service infrastructure of the university campus resembles that of a small city. It has, for example, a cold-water distribution system that extends 12.8 kilometers and an electrical distribution grid that runs 6 kilometers in length. The drinking water network totals 31.7 kilometers and is equipped with compressed air and steam distribution pipes.

One of the improvements we will introduce is the reduction of the university’s carbon footprint. To do so, we will advocate the use of renewable energy sources and boost system efficiency. We will also exercise sustainable use of the Grande Ronde and Wanapum aquifers and improve wastewater management.

This project by Sacyr Concesiones will double the capacity of the old roads, Ruta 2 and Ruta 7, and will provide a solution to one of the most important road corridors in Paraguay. 

Ruta PY 02 covers 170 km of roads, which will be widened and improved. The concessions company will also operate and maintain the infrastructure. The contract includes the construction of five alternative routes between the cities of Asunción and Caaguazú. 

Approximately 65% of the country's population, more than 4 million people, live in the area crossed by the PY 02.

A milestone in the history of Paraguay

This project is the result of the biggest civil engineering contract in the history of Paraguay, secured through the Public-Private Partnership (p3) Law, and the first of its kind to be executed here. The city of Antofagasta, in the north of Chile, has one of the most modern hospitals in the country, which opened in 2017. The new Hospital Regional de Antofagasta is the largest health center between Lima and Santiago. Salud Siglo XXI S.A., encompassing Sacyr Concesiones Chile SpA and Global Dominion Access S.A., is in charge of managing this center for a period of 15 years.

The hospital benefits more than 600,000 people, covering a highly complex area in terms of healthcare, the macro north zone, from Arica to Copiapó.

Innovation in the service of health

With the roll-out of this infrastructure, state-of-the-art equipment has been incorporated to carry out tests and diagnostics without patients having to travel to other regions in the country.

This significantly reduces the waiting list in specialized units.  For example, the arrival of the new Lithotripter, a machine that dissolves and pulverizes kidney stones, has reduced the Urology unit’s waiting list by 35%-40%.

NAIS: a plan to strengthen the Australian agricultural industry

We built the first stage of the North Adelaide Irrigation Scheme.

This infrastructure will provide a large-scale transfer network thanks to a new plant that will reuse treated waters, a main network, pumping stations, underwater and tank storage, and, finally, a distribution network used for horticultural production.

The project includes the installation of 29 km of underground pipes, creating 150 direct jobs in Adelaide. This project will contribute to the development of up to 300 hectares of land dedicated to export agriculture.

The new blocks are located in York Street, opposite the current campus building, over an area of 75,000 square meters. We built these blocks as part of a consortium together with the Lagan Construction Group. One is 4 storeys and the other is 11 storeys high. They also have 150 new spaces for various uses, from seminar rooms to lecture halls, and a library.

We used BIM technology and digital processes in the design to guarantee an effective and collaborative approach: all the stages in the development of the design, construction and delivery were optimized and monitored on a large scale by all the members of this project. 

This project received the Considerate Constructors Scheme 2017 Award in the UK in its silver category because “the site demonstrated extraordinary compliance in improving image and construction, obtaining 5 points in the Code of Consideration Practice”.

The Sohar seawater desalination plant, on the coast of Al Batinah, began operating in 2019. This reverse osmosis plant is the second largest in the country. It can desalinate 250,000 m3 water a day and currently supplies close to 220,000 people.

The desalination plant was designed with one essential objective in mind: to optimize the use of water and energy. For that reason, it is operated with a high level of automation.

The project represented an investment of close to 200 million euros. The publicly-owned Oman Power and Water Procurement Company awarded this project to the consortium led by Sacyr Agua (51%), which also included the Oman Brunei Investment Company (25%) and Sogex Oman (24%). The contract included the design, construction, ownership, finance, operation, maintenance and purchase of water for 20 years.

Our commitment to urban mobility in Brazil involves building one of the most transited subway systems in the world. Sacyr Engineering and Infrastructures is currently in charge of the extension works of Line 2 of the Sao Paulo Metro, consisting of an 8.3-kilometer and eight stops expansion. This service directly connects to lines 3-Red, 11-Coral (CPTM), and 15-Silver.

This line, also known as the green line (Linha 2-Verde), goes from Vila Prudente to Dutra, and is 7.3 kilometers long. We built it as an assignment for the Companhia do Metropolitano de São Paulo (Sao Paulo Metro Company) within a 69-month time frame for 443 million euros.

The new Hospital Biprovincial Quillota-Petorca, which we are building in the region of Valparaíso, Chile, will benefit more than 320,000 people who live in the ten ‘comuna’ districts comprising the provinces of Quillota and Petorca.

The health center will be built over 73,000 square meters. It will have 282 beds, nine pavilions, intensive care units, MRI, a heliport to transfer patients, and a design centered on patient needs.

The new Autopista Américo Vespucio Oriente I (AVO I) highway project, which we are working on as part of a P3 and a building consortium, is approximately 9 kilometers long. This mega structure crosses through six ‘comuna’ districts in Santiago de Chile and is one of the largest infrastructure projects in the whole of Latin America.

This project will provide a solution to increasing volumes of traffic and the poor north-south road connections, and will ease traffic in a highly congested area of the city. It will also reduce journey times, atmospheric and noise pollution, and fuel consumption, by moving most of the traffic that currently circulates underground.

We are carrying out six road infrastructure projects, five in Florida and one in Texas, alleviating traffic in some of their most congested zones. 
In Florida, we are widening the SR82 highway and remodeling a section of the I75 highway in the west of the State. We are rebuilding, remodeling and widening more than 12 km of road at the intersection of the I75 and SR70. 

We are designing and building three new roads in Miami-Dade county, south of Miami. We are also widening and improving two existing roads, including a new boulevard on Franjo Road.

In Jacksonville, we are building the First Coast Expressway, a new section of the SR-23, which includes 26 bridges. The longest, 300 meters long, will reach over the Black Creek river. 

In Texas, we are working on behalf of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to rebuild and widen a 11.5 km section of the interstate highway IH35E.

For this same client, we are also building a 13.2 km branch of the US59 highway, in the town in Diboll, Texas.

The project, awarded by Northern Ireland's Department of Infrastructures, included the design and construction of the road, which is 25 km long. 
This section is part of the North West Transport Corridor, which links the metropolitan area of Belfast and the North West of the country.

For the execution of this project, the consortium, made up of Sacyr, Will Bross and ROD, completed 22 structures, including four new interchanges and three roundabouts. The main figures for this project give a clear idea of its huge scope: 4 million cubic meters of earth moved, 500,000 tons in the execution of semi-flexible surfaces and 50 km of drainage systems.

As part of an international consortium, we designed, built, and currently operate two seawater desalination plants in Teclem Honaine and Sikda. The Teclem Honaine desalination plant is capable of producing 200,000 cubic meters of desalinated water a day. Construction began in 2007, and the plant began operating in 2010. It will be run by the consortium until 2037. The Skida plant can produce 100,000 cubic meters a day. Construction began in 2006, and it began operating in 2009. It will be operational until 2034. The process for both plants is divided into the following stages: pre-treatment using pressure filters, reverse osmosis, remineralization, sea water inlet. These two plants supply more than 1 million inhabitants.

The Qatari State Authority, Ashghal, awarded us the contract to carry out urban development works in South Al Meshaf, south of Doha.

This project includes the development of the adjacent area of 117 hectares, located 5 km west of Al Wakrah. It also includes 9.5 km of roads and a sewage pipe laid by excavating a micro tunnel at a depth of between 25 and 38 meters. This tunnel is 6.5 km long and its diameter is between 2 and 2.4 meters.  

This project has a budget of 114 million euros and it will strengthen our position in a strategic market, crucial to the future growth of our group.

Through our Italian subsidiary, SIS, we have undertaken a project to modernize and repair a 31 km section of the old Salerno-Reggio Calabria road. This project, with a budget of 815 million euros, has turned this section of the highway into a world class toll road. 

The section runs between the Calore Viaduct (km 108) and the Lauria Nord exit (km 139), a mountainous area with a complex orography, which involved building 36 new viaducts, 13 double tunnels with a tube length of 15.3 km, 8 double false tunnels, 2.2 km in total length, and 3 new slip lanes.

A challenge successfully completed

We love a challenge, and the Salerno-Reggio Calabria toll road brought plenty of them. The new viaducts run for a total length of 13 km. The most exceptional viaducts include: Albanese (222 meters), Secco (324 meters), Noce (498 meters), San Francesco (502 meters) and Serra (235 meters with a maximum height of 125 meters). As for the tunnels, four of them represented a particular challenge in terms of geotechnical difficulty: Casalbuono (1,745 meters long), Renazza (1,190 meters), Sirino (782 meters) and Naturalle 1 (630 meters).

The Pedemontana-Veneta toll road is one of the most important infrastructure projects in Italy. It is also one of the biggest projects in our portfolio there, with a planned investment of 2.6 billion euros. 
The company Superstrada Pedemontana Veneta is in charge of designing, building, financing, running, and maintaining the toll road for a period of 39 years following completion of construction. 
This project involves building 162 km of road. 94 km of the main road that will link 34 municipalities and the industrial area of Vicenza and Treviso. The remaining 68 km are for secondary access roads. This road will also include two tunnels - the Malo tunnel (6 km) and the S. Urbano tunnel (1.5 km) - and eight viaducts. 
The infrastructure guarantees the high demand for mobility in the most industrialized area of the Veneto region, with close to half a million companies and 4.9 million inhabitants.

The Pedemontana-Veneta toll road is part of the European TEN-T network. It is considered a nationally significant strategic asset on account of its location between the existing A4 and A27 toll roads, crossing the Veneto Region and passing through the provinces of Vicenza and Treviso. The construction of this toll road was financed by means of the largest bond issue in Europe for a greenfield project, to the tune of 1.571 billion euros. The issue has been awarded four international prizes.

The Autopista al Mar 1 project and the second tunnel tube for the Túnel de Occidente, executed by Desarrollo Vial al Mar Devimar, improves connections between the city of Medellín and the West and South West of Antioquia. It also bridges the distance between the department’s administrative capital and the ports of Urabá in Antioquia.

This road is 181 km long. The project involves building 33 km of dual carriageway, building the second tunnel tube for the Túnel de Occidente, 4.6 km long, running parallel to the existing one; repairing 76 km of road; and building 45 vehicular bridges.  This project fulfills one of our most important objectives: to improve quality of life for people through infrastructures.

With the Autopista al Mar 1 project, we have created more than 3,200 direct and indirect jobs. We have also implemented and executed social and environmental management programs and projects with a view to strengthening relations with communities in the region whilst improving their quality of life.  

Second tunnel tube in the Túnel de Occidente

With this project, we have connected the two sides of one of the most emblematic parts in the Autopista al Mar 1 project in Colombia. Over the course of two years, 241 people worked 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to achieve this strategic connection between the cities of Medellin and Santa Fe in Antioquia. During the execution of the work, we faced many technical and organizational challenges.

The state of emergency generated by the Covid-19 pandemic has been an added difficulty, which our team has managed to successfully overcome. At Sacyr, we overcome challenges through our experience and energy; nothing stops us.

Vial Unión del Sur is the company responsible for the P3 project 4G Rumichaca-Pasto, in the department of Nariño, in southern Colombia. This mega road infrastructure will offer a modern and effective solution to border mobility between Ecuador and Colombia.

This project, which includes the operation and maintenance of the road corridor, will improve the competitiveness of the country as a whole. It will also improve the connectivity of the region and promote the economic and social development of communities living in the seven municipalities in this area: El Contadero, Iles, Imués, Tangua, Yacuanquer and Pasto.

The project involves repairing 15.7 km of road between Rumichaca and the village of San Juan in Ipiales; rebuilding 62.1 km of dual carriageway between the villages of San Juan and Catambuco (25 km of new dual carriageway between San Juan and Pilcuán Viejo); and improving a 5.2 Km  section between Catambuco and Pasto.

The Pumarejo Bridge (Barranquilla, Colombia) is one of the longest cable-stayed bridges in Colombia, a major reference in terms of its innovation, design, and safety. At 2,173 meters in length with a 38.1 meter deck, the widest in Latin America, this bridge is a real challenge in terms of engineering. 

Which is why we used the most advanced building techniques to tackle this challenge. It was the first time that some of these technologies, such as the self-launching formwork used to build the deck, had been used in Colombia. 

This project, launched by Colombia’s national road institute, Invias, executed by Sacyr Ingeniería e Infraestructuras, and completed in 2019, has improved the navigability of the Magdalena River, allowing larger ships to pass beneath it. Thanks to this project, vessels up to 45 meters high can now pass beneath the bridge, and the length of the main cable-stayed span is 380 meters.

Pumarejo is one of the longest bridges of its kind in Colombia. It is a two-way bridge, with three lanes in each direction, 1 km of viaducts and access points, 3.2 km of pedestrian walkways, and a further 3.2 km of cycle lanes. A titanic feat of engineering that looks ahead to the future.

Infrastructure that improves the lives of people 

The Pumarejo Bridge has not only improved Colombia’s road connections, it has also generated a positive impact on the development of the country and the quality of life of its citizens. 

Over the course of this four-year project, 5,600 jobs have been created. At the peak of activity, there were 1,500 people working on this project, 80% of whom were from the region itself. Engineers, welders, machinery operators, framers, metal workers, site managers.

All the workers involved with this project have brought their expertise, hard work and enthusiasm to this extremely technical and highly symbolic feat of engineering.

In 2007, Sacyr Ingeniería e Infraestructuras carried out the construction work for the N-6 toll road, which stretches over 57.6 km. The project included the design, construction, finance, running, and maintenance of the toll road, which opened in 2019.

It achieved three major goals: alleviating traffic on the old road, increasing safety levels, and reducing journey times. Thanks to the efficiency achieved in the construction and management stages, journey times have been reduced by almost 40 minutes. 

The new road has two lanes in both directions and links the towns of Galway and Ballinasloe, in the north west of Ireland, covering a route with high levels of traffic.
