Sacyr Environment signs an agreement with the Carbon Fund to optimize the processes of its waste treatment plants

Sacyr will make the Miramundo and Las Calandrias plants in Cádiz more efficient and reduce its carbon footprint by up to 90%.

The company will improve the methane gas-recovery processes and its transformation into electrical energy or biomethane with a green label.

Sacyr Environment has signed a contract with the Carbon Fund for a Sustainable Economy (FES-CO2) to modernize and make the waste treatment plants in Miramundo (Cádiz) and Las Calandrias (Jerez de la Frontera) more efficient. The company will improve the methane gas-recovery processes and its transformation into electrical energy or biomethane with a green label.

With this agreement, FES-CO2, an agency under the Spanish Office of Climate Change of the Ministry for Ecological Transition, recognizes Sacyr Environment’s efforts in reducing CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.

The agreement promotes the modernization of the facilities and the optimization and efficiency of methane gas-recovery processes. Once recovered, the gas can be transformed into electrical energy, injected into the gas network or directly used as vehicular natural gas.

The Spanish Office of Climate Change will subsidize these Sacyr projects with a payment of 9.7 euros for each ton of CO2 not released into the atmosphere.

Improvements in Miramundo and Las Calandrias

In the waste treatment plants (WTP) of Miramundo and Las Calandrias Sacyr will carry out a technological improvement and modernization program for the urban solid waste treatment system by reducing biodegradable material in the refuse deposited in landfill. This will achieve:

• Thermal utilization of the organic content of the waste and of the rejection.

• Improvement of waste to use as fuel.

• Modernization of the WTP to increase the volume of organic material recovered from and processed in the composting.

The forecast is that the carbon footprint of the facilities will be significantly reduced, by up to 90%.

We measure our carbon footprint

This new initiative is part of the Sacyr Group’s commitment in the fight against climate change. Sacyr believes the management of CO2 is a priority action within its organization, which offers important opportunities for the growth, development and competitiveness of its companies, and which contributes to improve the environment, society and the future.

Since 2015, Sacyr has renewed the registration of its corporate carbon footprint in the Carbon Footprint, Offset and Carbon Dioxide Absorption Projects Registry of the Ministry for Ecological Transition, with the incorporation of emissions corresponding to 2017.
