The Sacyr Foundation, the Infanta Cristina Hospital and Adopta un Abuelo join forces to fight unwanted loneliness

  • This collaboration agreement is a proof of commitment to the care and well-being of our seniors and the support of intergenerational relationships.

The Sacyr Foundation has signed a collaboration agreement with Infanta Cristina University Hospital and Adopta Un Abuelo to keep the elderly people at risk of suffering unwanted loneliness company and promote intergenerational relationships.

This collaboration will allow the elderly people who are admitted or have medical appointments at Infanta Cristina University Hospital (Parla), managed by Sacyr Concesiones, to receive phone calls from volunteers registered on the Adopta un Abuelo app.

The volunteers from the intergenerational program will keep the patients company during their hospital stays with the goal of creating long-term relationships that can still stand once the patient has been discharged, thanks to the app and Adopta un Abuelo’s team of social workers.

In the words of Rebeca López, Director of Operations of Adopta un Abuelo: “We are so glad to have signed this collaboration agreement. I want to thank the entire Infanta Cristina Hospital team and the Sacyr Foundation for putting their trust on our program to accompany elderly people. This is just another way to continue working for the social inclusion of seniors”.

Adopta Un Abuelo is an accompanying intergenerational program for elderly people who are at risk of suffering loneliness. Its aim is to make elderly people feel listened to, accompanied and loved, and for the volunteers to have the chance to learn values and have learning experiences.

Work at hospitals

With this collaboration agreement, Adopta Un Abuelo takes its first step in working at hospitals. Currently, this organization works with more than 280 retirement homes, and its more than 6,200 volunteers have done more than 45,700 hours of volunteer work by keeping over 3,500 elderly people company.

The Sacyr Foundation continues to support initiatives that have a positive social and environmental outcome for society, in line with the goals in its 2021-2025 Sacyr Sustainable Action Plan.

In 2021, more than 500,000 people were indirect beneficiaries of the Sacyr Foundation’s different initiatives.

For Pedro Alonso, Executive director of the Sacyr Foundation, this agreement “enhances relevant commitments for Sacyr, such as corporate volunteer work and generational diversity by encouraging intergenerational relationships”.

Volunteers Club

Through the Sacyr Volunteer Club, Sacyr employees collaborate with Adopta un Abuelo by making phone calls to elderly people to keep them company and creating intergenerational relationships.

Infanta Cristina University Hospital includes this project within its Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives, improving the patients’ experience and their stay in the center.

Sacyr Concesiones manages the non-healthcare services at the hospital, which has 180 rooms and provides healthcare to a population of approximately 200,00 people.
