Sacyr to build the LP-1 highway in La Palma (Canary islands) and the Zafra bypass (Badajoz)

  • Sacyr Engineering and Infrastructures has won two new highway contracts in Spain worth € 65 million: the LP-1 Los Llanos – Tijarafe highway in the island of La Palma (€ 46 million) and the Zafra - Badajoz bypass (€ 19 million).

The Sacyr – Cavosa – Grúas Tajadre joint venture will carry out the development and commissioning of a 7.6 km section of the LP – 1 highway between Los Llanos y Tijarafe, in the northwest of the island of La Palma, for the Consejería de Obras Públicas (Department of Public Works) of the Government of the Canary Islands within a 44-month deadline.

This project will simplify the current route of the road, taking the orography of the terrain into account, while respecting the environmental value of the area at all times. The improvement of the highway conditions will significantly increase the safety and communications conditions of this area of the island.

The main activities in this development include:

• The construction of a new 530-meter tunnel, to allow the road to pass through the southern the southern hillside of the Barranco del Jorado.

• Construction of a 95-meter viaduct over the Barranco del Jorado to allow access to the southern end of the aforementioned tunnel,

• Construction of two viaducts to bridge the crossings over the Los Gomeros and El Jesús cliffs, 84-meters and 81-meters long, respectively. The arrangement of these structures allows to shorten the route of the LP-1 highway by modifying the current layout to prevent traffic from going through two sharp curves.

This project is located in the northwestern region of La Palma and joins the other rebuilding and recovery developments in the island after the volcanic eruption.

Zafra bypass

Sacyr, in a joint venture with Construcciones Sevilla Nevado, will carry out the construction of the Zafra bypass within a 24-month deadline for the Dirección General de Carreteras of the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda.

The project is a solution to the significant increase in traffic and facilitates to the accesses in the crossing of the N-432 through the center of this municipality.

The 8-kilometer bypass will have junctions with the N-432 in several points, that allow for alternative routes, and a third interchange that will connect the bypass with the EX-101 highway.

For this development, we will carry out 11 structures to resolve the grade separations between the main road and the access roads and to maintain the current transversal permeability of the road network in the future bypass. This project will move close to 49,000 tons of hot asphalt mixtures and will involve an earthwork volume of 475,000 m3.
